Mexican amberwing        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Amberwings are small dragonflies that often perch near the ground.   The Mexican amberwing is common in the American southwest; I photographed the two females on a cockleburr stem (above, left) and a twig (lower right), and a males on twigs; all were at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California, in September and October.
