I photographed these late-summer flowers in the bleak alpine grasslands near the Barcroft Laboratory, at an altitude of about 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). In the upper right picture, the distant Sierra Nevada crest is visible through the 'notch' between Sheep and Piute Mountain and Mt. Barcroft to the right. For all of these images, I used a graduated neutral-density filter to get appropriate exposures on both the sky and the ground. |
