The 'lost' Inca city of Machu Picchu, in the Peruvian Andes, is one of the world's iconic destinations.   Why it was built in the 15th century, and why it was abandoned less than 100 years later, remain enigmatic.   I found it an amazing place in a stunning setting, but on the day we visited it was overrun with tourists and the light was harsh.   Therefore I concentrated on sweeping overviews and close-ups of the remarkable stonework construction.
