The Carrizo Plain National Monument is a little-known dry valley in central California. It is home to several endangered or threatened species, including the San Joaquin kit fox, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, and the giant and short-nosed kangaroo rats (the density of rodent burrows was astoundingly high). In good years it hosts a spectacular wildflower show, but not when I took these photos in early Spring 2013. Nevertheless, it offered some interesting landscapes, especially at dawn and dusk. |
