Although California generally does not sport the intense fall colors seen in northeastern North America, some trees do put on a bit of a show. The huge old sycamores in the upper photos were beginning to turn yellow and gold when I photographed them in Two Trees Canyon, near Riverside, California. The two lower images are of another old sycamore, this one in Cave Creek Canyon near Portal, Arizona. To get sweeping wide views of these trees, I used an extreme wide-angle zoom lens at its shortest focal length of 12 mm; on my digital camera the field of view was roughly equivalent to a 15.5 mm lens on a 35 mm film camera. With a view this wide, the gradation in color across the arc of the sky -- usually not noticeable with longer lenses -- is readily apparent. |
