Chaparral mallow,   Malacothamnus fasciculatus        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chaparral mallow (or bushmallow) is common in chaparral and coastal scrub in southern California and Baja California.   Unlike many mallows, this plant grows into a substantial shrub or bush.   These were photographed in Sycamore Canyon Park in Riverside, California after the abundant rains of the 2016-2017 winter.   There was just enough wind to make flower photography really annoying, but not quite impossible.
