Red-tailed chipmunk (Neotamias ruficaudus)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chipmunks are an attractive and species-rich group, especially in mountainous regions in the western US and Canada; other species occur in eastern North America and in Eurasia.   All are active, alert, and fast-moving.   The red-tailed chipmunk is a richly-colored species from northern conifer forests; as its name implies it has a reddish tinge to the head   These photos were taken in Glacier National Park in Montana.   Chipmunk species pictured on this site include:

  • Canon 1D4; 800 mm IS lens, some with 1.4X converter and/or extension tubes, fill-in flash (2013)
