Botta's pocket gopher        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Many species of pocket gophers occur in North America; I'm pretty sure this is the widely-distributed Botta's pocket gopher (or valley pocket gopher), Thomomys bottae.   All pocket gophers are largely fossorial and don't like to emerge from their burrows, and consequently I have no photos showing the entire animal.   They are heartily disliked by gardeners but I think they're kind of cute, and many bird and mammal predators are fond of them.   This one was at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California
