Several species of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus) are common across much of North America; often they are simply called 'cottontails'. This one is the mountain, or Nuttall's cottontail (S. nuttallii), found in rocky or brushy areas of sagebrush, and sometimes into forests, from the eastern Sierra to the Black Hills, southern Canada to Arizona and New Mexico. It can be identified by the prominent black line around the ear margins, easily visible in these images. I photographed these in Mono County, California.
