Jaguars -- the largest cats in the Americas, and the third-biggest of all felids -- are icons of Amazonia. Normally they are forest dwellers and hence are hard to see, but in cool weather they sometimes bask on riverbanks. That's what this one was doing as we traveled down the Rio Manu in southeastern Peru. There were six of us in a small boat, and the cat watched us calmly for several minutes before retiring back into the forest. Using a long lens hand-held from a moving boat is usually a pain, but I was able to take a lot of images and many of them were quite sharp despite the low shutter speed necessitated by dim light. |
