Guanacos        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Guanacos are ubiquitous in the wilder regions of Patagonia; we started to see them a few kilometers north of the airport at Punta Arenas, and they were abundant in the eastern half of Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, where most of these images were made.   Some of the herds numbers in the hundreds, although the basic social structure is 'built' around smaller groups.   To me, young guanacos (as in several of these photos) are cute, but the adults seem goofy and almost comical.   The pair above at right are mating, and during that long process the male made lots of vaguely obscene gargling noises and the pair was closely inspected by lots of curious youngsters.
