Mule deer (named for their huge ears) are common in much of western North America, and I'm a little embarrassed that I don't have any really good images of them. Most of these deer were photographed in Zion National Park in Utah, and one of the bucks was at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. One picture of a doe is a bit notable because one doesn't often have a chance to get a tightly-framed deer image with a wideangle zoom -- but this one was very confiding with cars (I shot out the passenger window). The group of mule deer at the bottom of the page was wintering in Long Valley, near Crowley Lake and the town of Mammoth Lakes, in eastern California. The deer in the 'snow scenes' were in Zion Park in winter. These deer descend from the high snowy mountains in winter to find warmer weather and better food in the nearby valleys. In the background are the peaks of the White Mountains. A much more distant view of a mule deer buck can be seen at upper right on this page. |
