Chipmunks are an attractive and species-rich group, especially in mountainous regions in the western US; others occur in eastern North America and in Eurasia.  All are active, alert, and fast-moving.  Cliff chipmunks, as their name implies, are often found in rocky canyons and similar habitat; they are the least strikingly marked of the North American chipmunks and can be recognized by plain gray flanks with striping largely limited to a dark line down the spine.   These were photographed in the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona.   Chipmunk species pictured on this site include:
