Richardson's ground squirrels (Urocitellus richardsonii) are medium-sized plainly-marked squirrels from the mountain west and high plains of North America. They are quite similar to the Belding's ground squirrel of the Sierra Nevada. Like nearly all ground squirrels they are hibernators, active in spring and summer and in deep torpor over most of the cold winter. These were photographed in Yellowstone National Park.
