Several species of 'jackrabbits' (in reality, hares) are found in North America, including the widely-distributed black-tailed jackrabbit, the white-tailed jackrabbit, and this species, the antelope jackrabbit -- named for the extensive white areas on its rump and hind legs. Antelope jackrabbits have a very restricted range in the United States: basically just southern Arizona and New Mexico. These were photographed in Green Valley, Arizona; I found them startlingly large but very shy and hard to approach. Finally, one individual evidently decided I was harmless and permitted some good closeup images. |
