American badgers, like their European relatives, are large, squat mustelids specialized for digging: short legs and long, strong claws. Both species have striking black-and-white head markings, but unlike European badgers, American badgers tend to be quite solitary. I was very pleased to encounter these two (juveniles, I think) on the Pawnee Grassland in northeastern Colorado. They seemed wary but curious and permitted a few photographs from my car. One has a fly on its head in a couple of images. |
