Orange-throated whiptails (Aspidoscelis hyperythra) are small whiptails that may be endangered by habitat loss within their restricted range (southern California and Baja California, Mexico). As their name implies, they sometimes show an orange throat patch that (in adult males) may extend to the belly and even the undertail. All whiptails are hard to photograph in the wild: they seldom sit still and their long, thin shape does not fit easily into standard image formats. These paused briefly to sun-bask along a trail in the Box Springs Mountains near Riverside, CA. |
