This frog is very common in wet forests, meadows, lakesides, and streams in Poland. Its squeek-squawk call, rather like a hoarse 'rubber duck', is a typical spring and early summer sound. Males produce the surprisingly loud call from vocal sacs that protrude like white balloons from in back of the jaw hinge, as seen in some of these image. As their name suggests, males are a bright green color, while females (I think -- not 100% sure of this) are darker and more patterned with brown and black markings. The 'female' below at right is being attacked by two mosquitos. The images were taken at the edge of the Palace Park lakes and in the nearby 'Strict Reserve' in Bialowieza, in northeastern Poland. |
