American crocodile        Images © Mark A. Chappell

American crocodiles are rare and elusive.   They have been much less successful in coping with civilization than their relative the American alligator, which thrives in pretty much any freshwater habitat with food (fish, turtles, frogs, small dogs....).   This particular twelve-foot animal has a famous and rather sad history.   She is the northernmost wild adult crocodile and, since there are no nearby adult males, has lived a celibate life for many years at the Ding Darling refuge on Sanibel Island in southwest Florida.   Every few years she lays a batch of infertile eggs, and she often basks right next to the road (the lower photo was taken with a wideangle lens from the road).
