I took these photos on a couple of fairly clear June nights, near Bishop, California. The 'star trails' view was looking north towards the north star Polaris; the mountain range in this and the other images is the Whites, on the eastern edge of the Owens Valley. The shots of the Milky Way were taken with a fisheye lens, resulting in the curvature evident in the ground. Night sky images push a camera to its limits: the Milky Way shots were taken wide open (f2.8) for 30 seconds -- any more and star start to look like streaks instead of points -- and at very high ISO. |
