Male summer tanagers are deep red and generally rather shy; females are olive-green to reddish (and are also shy). As their name implies, summer tanagers are summer breeders in the US. Most of these were photographed at Big Morongo Reserve in southeastern California and in southeastern Arizona. One image was from Manhattan, Kansas; for unknown reasons this bird has a much yellower bill than the ones from California. One was taken of a wintering bird in Tatama National Park, Colombia. |
