Oropendula        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Oropendulas are a group of large Neotropical icterids (blackbird and oriole relatives) famous for their long pendulous nests, strange vocalizations, and -- among behavioral ecologists -- for a sometimes symbiotic, sometimes parasitic relationship with giant cowbirds.   This one was photographed in a tree beside the Panama Canal in Gamboa, Panama.
