Epaulet oriole        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Epaulet orioles are an exception to the general 'rule' that tropical species are more brightly colored than higher-latitude congeners.   This species -- black with a yellow shoulder -- is pretty dull compared to North American orioles such as Scott's, Bullock's, or hooded orioles.   I photographed this one at Pantiacolla Lodge in the Peruvian Amazon.
