Eastern and western meadowlarks are quite similar; plumage differences are subtle and they are best identified by song or by location. The bird at the top of the page, photographed in July in eastern kansas, is an Eastern meadowlark. Unfortunately meadowlarks were not singing in winter, when the photos below were taken. To compound the identification problem, both species occur in the general area where I took the pictures: Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. Based on the buffy flanks and rather contrasty head pattern, I am reasonably -- but not totally -- sure this bird is an eastern meadowlark. Feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong. |
