This is one of my favorite Patagonian birds. It strongly reminds most birders from North America of the meadowlarks there: it lives in open country, has a vaguely similar shape, shows bright coloration on its underside, and even has some similarities in the call. We found many of these birds in and around Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in south Chile. All of the ones on this page are males; females are smaller and brownish, lacking the red underside.
To me, 'long-tailed meadowlark' seems kind of a klutzy name for such an interesting bird. I much prefer the simpler and more melodic Chilean name: 'Loica'.
