White-throated sparrows breed in the eastern US and Canada and only occasionally stray to the west coast. They occur in two color morphs, both shown here. The 'tan-striped' bird was photographed in a patch of red-leaved poison oak at Molera Park, near Big Sur in California. The more familiar white-striped forms, with more striking black-and-white head markings, were photographed near Riverside and Monterey, California and Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. More photos of white-throated sparrows are here. |
