Pyrrhuloxias, close relatives of cardinals, live in deserts and scrublands in Mexio and the southwestern US. Males have gray plumage with red highlights; females look like female cardinals but are grayer and have more strongly curved bills. The birds in most of these pictures were in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, including the female on cactus at the bottom of the page. The other birds were photographed in southeastern Arizona and in San Antonio, New Mexico. |
