Various races of the dark-eyed junco are found over much of North America; they differ in the color of the 'hood' and the sides (and confusingly, intergrade with other races). This page shows the 'pink-sided' race, which breeds in the northern Rocky Mountains. All juncos are forest birds that nest on the ground and often form loose flocks (with multiple races) in winter. These were photographed in southeastern Arizona. Other pages show the 'gray-headed' and 'slate-colored' and 'Oregon' races, and also a related species, the yellow-eyed junco. |
