Painted bunting        Images © Mark A. Chappell

One of my lifelong birding goals was to see the painted bunting, an almost garishly-colored bird of the American southeast.   I finally saw them on a trip to southern Florida (at the Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary), but they were very shy and difficult to photograph.   A few years late, my friend Dave Rintoul showed us a number of breeding birds near Manhattan, Kansas, where the bulk of these images were made.   Also present were many indigo buntings.  Most of the photos show the brightly colored males.
