These male lazuli buntings were singing their territorial songs in scrubby spring vegetation in the Box Springs Mountains, near Riverside, California, and in upper Swall Meadows in Mono County, California. They were difficult to photograph because they were wary and tended to remain in fairly thick cover, but eventually patience paid off. The juvenile male was easier in the center of the page: he was coming to a feeder in Green Valley, Arizona. The female (overall gray-brown) was at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, southern California. More photos of this species are on another page. |
