Lark sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The large, colorful, strikingly marked lark sparrow is one of the most attractive of the North American sparrows.   It is an inhabitant of dry, open grassland and woodland.   These were in the Panoche Valley and the nearby Carrizo Plain in central California, and near Riverside.   In one photo, a lark sparrow is perched next to a Savannah sparrow.
