Gray-hooded sierra-finch; Chilean name Cometocino de Gay        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The sierra-finches are a group of South American birds that are typically associated with mountainous regions, as their name suggests.   We found two species in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in southern Chile, the gray-headed sierra finch shown here and the very similar Patagonian sierra-finch, which has a slightly more colorful back.   All of these birds were eating a dark-blue berry that has stained their beaks to varying degrees.
