Characteristic residents of grassy fields, grasshopper sparrows are sometimes hard to see, but their buzzing high-pitched insect-like song often reveals their presence. They have a complex pattern on the back, a clear buffy breast, and a notably 'flat' head profile. These were photographed at the Santa Rosa Plateau near Temecula, Desert Center, Fort Ord National Monument (all in California), Manhattan, Kansas, the Pawnee Grassland in northern Colorado, and at Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Montana. |
