Five-striped sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Five-striped sparrows are a Mexican species that gets into the US only in southeastern Arizona.  Formerly they were found in very few sites close to (or on) the Mexican border, but there has been some northward movement.   Besides being a prized sighting for birders, it's a strikingly handsome sparrow.   This bird was photographed in Montosa Canyon at the base of Mount Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains..
