Canyon towhee        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The California and canyon towhees used to be considered a race of the widely-distributed brown towhee, but both now have full species status.   The canyon towhee is an inland Rocky mountain species, while the California towhee, true to its name, is found mainly along the west coast.  Canyon towhees have a very obvious dark spot on the breast, clearly visible in these birds.   They were photographed in the Chiracahua Mountains and in Green Valley, Arizona, and in New Mexico.
