The California towhee used to be considered a race of the widely-distributed brown towhee, but it now has full species status (along with the closely related canyon towhee from the interior west). The musical 'chink' notes of California towhees are familar sounds in gardens, chaparral, and woodlands, where they are abundant and often very confiding residents. The birds perched on granite boulders were photographed at the University of California's Botanical Garden, the nearby San Jacinto Wildlife Area, and at UC's Motte Rimrock Reserve near Perris, California; the other was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in nearby Orange County. |
