Nelson's sparrows (very similar to LeConte's sparrow) are grassland birds that breed in northern prairies in Canada and the northernmost US. Occasional vagrants show up in California. This one appeared for a few days on Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove, where it flitted between a patch of long grass and piles of kelp on the beach. Very fast-moving and cryptic, it was a challenge to photograph. |
