Nelson's sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Nelson's sparrows (very similar to LeConte's sparrow) are grassland birds that breed in northern prairies in Canada and the northernmost US.   Occasional vagrants show up in California.   This one appeared for a few days on Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove, where it flitted between a patch of long grass and piles of kelp on the beach.   Very fast-moving and cryptic, it was a challenge to photograph.
