McKay's bunting        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The McKay's bunting is a small songbird of very limited distribution, breeding only on St. Matthew and Hall Islands in the Bering Sea, wintering mainly on the west coast of Alaska and on Nunivak Island.   I photographed this male on St. Paul Island, in the Pribilof group -- the only bird of his species on the island, he was breeding with a female snow bunting (a very closely related species).  He was not very cooperative and refused to come close enough for a good photo.
