These beautiful little birds (which also have a lovely song) breed across the North American continent on high-latitude tundra. I photographed the adult males as they sang from lush vegetation and lichen-covered rocks on St. Paul Island, in the Pribilof group in the Bering Sea off western Alaska, and on the tundra near Barrow, at the northernmost tip of Alaska. Most of the photos were taken on cloudy (sometimes drizzly) days and the soft light helped give good images of the birds' highly contrasty plumage. The wintering juvenile bird was near Perris in southern California. |
