Hutton's vireos are common in oak forests in California and nearby states. They are small and rather plain, and bear a strong resemblance to ruby-crowned kinglets. Compared to the latter, Hutton's vireos have bigger heads, stouter, slightly curved bills, and lack the black patch on the primaries that is often obvious in ruby-crowns. And of course, Hutton's vireos lack any trace of a ruby crown patch. These were foraging in Molera State Park, Monterey County, California. |
