Harris's sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These large, long-tailed sparrows breed near treeline at high latitudes and migrate to the southern US during the winter.   The adults (especially males) have striking black head and neck markings; juveniles shows just a little of that on its buffy head (the red bill is also distinctive).   I photographed these at feeders at the headquarters of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and in Churchill, Manitoba.
