When I first saw this rather plain-colored little sparrow on the Pawnee Grasslands in northeastern Colorado, I could not identify it: the partially molted and somewhat ragged plumage was a puzzle. Eventually I figured out it was a Cassin's sparrow, in the extreme northeastern corner of this species' range. Cassin's sparrows are birds of arid grasslands and I had previously seen them only in southern Arizona; this one was singing, which helped in identification. On a second visit two years later, I photographed more of these interesting birds. |
