Botteri's sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Botteri's sparrows are grassland birds (often in open mesquite woodlands) of the southwest.   They are late summer breeders, following the monsoon rains and the associated burst of productivity.   These were photographed near the base of the Santa Rita Mountains of southeastern Arizona.
