American pipits (formerly called water pipits) are small, unobtrusive, dull-colored but charming little birds that frequent fields, riverbanks, beaches, and other open areas.  These were foraging among small sand piles on the Coronado Island beach in San Diego, California (below, left), at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County, California (above), and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico (bottom right).
