Abert's towhees are desert birds with a very small range in southeastern California, western and southern Arizona, and along the Colorado River into Nevada. Rather large for towhees, they closely resemble the more widely-distributed California and Canyon towhees, but have a characteristic black mask. Like most towhees, Abert's towhees favor dense vegetation are are often hard to see. These were photographed in a mesquite tree at the Living Desert Reserve, near Palm Desert, California (about as far west as the species gets), and in the Imperial Valley, somewhat farther east. |
