The Pacific wren was recently split from the eastern winter wren and the Eurasian wren (all formerly called 'winter wren' or just 'wren' in Europe). All have comically short tails and retiring habits, especially in winter. I these out of dense thickets long enough for a few pictures. One was near the Big Sur River mouth in Andrew Molera State Park, California; others were on the nearby Monterey Peninsula. The pale bird against clear sky is of the large Aleutian Islands race; it was photographed on St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs group off western Alaska. I'm not sure if the Pribilofs birds are Eurasian or Pacific wrens in the new taxonomy. |
