Despite its name, and its habit of waving its long tail about, the willie wagtail is not a true wagtail. It is the most common and widely distributed of the several species of fantail found in Australia. Willie wagtails are often abundant and confiding; the one in the lower right image was perching on a small boat on a trailer in front of a house, busily snatching up flying or crawling insects. I took that photo in Wombara, on the coast of New South Wales near Wollongong; the other images were made at the Fowlers Gap research station in far northwestern NSW. |
