Varied thrushes are robin-like birds of deep forests in the Pacific Northwest and southern Alaska. They are easily identified by their gray or black breast-bands and orange wing-bars. Markings are much brighter in adult males (above, photographed near Anchorage, Alaska). The birds below (both in somewhat ragged post-breeding molt) were photographed near Seward, Alaska as they fed on soapberries. I think the bird in the bottom image may be a fledgling or juvenile. |
