Thrush-nightingales are small, brownish birds, unremarkable in appearance but with astonishingly powerful voices. I can attest that they are very loud, and my European bird book states that they can be heard at distance of up to a kilometer. Despite their vocal powers, they are unobtrusive birds, usually difficult to see because they prefer to remain high in the canopy or in thick vegetation. I took these pictures in the small town of Bialowieza in northeastern Poland. One or two individuals had gotten used to people and permitted fairly close approach. |
