The song thrush is a common forest bird in much of Europe -- particularly so in eastern Poland -- and is well-known for its habit of eating snails and depositing their shells in neat piles. It also eats worms, much like North American robins (below at left). Like most thrushes it is an excellent singer, and its voice is a characteristic sound of European forests and woodlands in spring. Oddly, fledglings (near the bottom of the page) leave the nest several days before they can fly and hop around the forest floor; they are very vulnerable at this stage and are heavily preyed upon by hawks, owls, martens, and other predators. These were photographed in Bialowieza, Poland. |
